Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on thin paper | Scale: not stated. 1:725,000 approx. | RCIN 730057

A map of the distribution and numbers of the quartered French, Spanish and Austrian troops in Milan and surrounding areas, August 1746. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The Battle of Piacenza had taken place on 16 June 1746 between the French and Spanish army and the Austrians and Sardinians, a couple of months before the troops were quartered in the locations recorded on this map. The area covered extends from Casale Monferrato (45°08'00"N 08°27'25"E) and Arona 45°45'32"N 08°33'25"E) in the west to Parma (44°48'09"N 10°19'44"E) in the east, and from Bergamo (45°41'52"N 09°40'08"E) and Como (45°48'35"N 09°05'14"E) in the north to Alessandria (44°54'44"N 08°37'08"E) and Piacenza (45°02'48"N 09°41'57"E) in the south. Each fortified city is drawn in plan and the numbers and nationalities of troops present are noted.

The former folding of this item to such a small size, and the presence of what appears to be sealing wax, suggests that it was sent in dispatches or with correspondence, at some point.
