Map of Piacenza, 1746 (Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna, Italy) 45°02'48"N 09°41'57"E

1746 or later

Pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: | RCIN 730037

A map of Piacenza with the positions of the Spanish and Austrian armies on 1 May 1746. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The Battle of Piacenza took place on 16 June 1746 between the French and Spanish army and the Austrians and Sardinians. This map shows the positions of the armies in May, together with fieldworks, around the city. This is a comparatively large-scale map showing the positions of the encamped armies in relation to the micro-topography: cultivated fields, roads, hedgerows, drains, etc., all of which appear to be shown stylistically rather than resulting from an accurate survey. The area annotated as ‘Po Mort’ probably refers to the area where the Po formerly flowed and which was now, indicated by the symbols of tufted vegetation, possibly reeds or rushes, and watery colouring, a marshy area. The map covers only the immediate vicinity of Piacenza.
