Etching and engraving; printed on paper; hand-coloured | Scale: 1:6,500 approx. | RCIN 729026

A map of the siege of Furnes by the French from 7 to 10 July 1744. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top (cardinal points).

A map of the siege of Furnes (see also RCIN 729001.e) showing, coloured in yellow, the French approach works together with the number of mortars and pieces of field artillery that were placed at strategic points along the trenches. A false attack, to the south of the fortress, is shown in the inset. It followed the successful sieges of Menen on 5 June (RCIN 729001.b), which was the first obstacle to an army coming from the south, Ypres, 15-24 June (RCINs 729001.c and 729018) and Knocke which fell on 29 June (RCIN 729001.d). These three fortresses had been designed by Vauban to form an impassable wall to invaders from the south.
