Map of Weilburg, 1745 (Weilburg, Hesse, Germany) 50°29'00"N 08°15'00"E

1745 or later

Pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:8,500 approx. | RCIN 729113

A map of the town of Weilberg, 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with east-south-east to top (cardinal points with magnetic north).

A map identifying the fortified points of Weilburg, such as the bridges, one of stone, partly paved with wood, a wooden covered bridge which acted as an aqueduct to bring water for the fountains and over which two men could pass abreast, but was not passable for horses; new works designed to cover one of the gates, and a pierced wall which could take four pieces of field artillery to defend the road.

A small vignette, typical of J.C. Treu's work, bottom left, depicts a tree overhanging a bank at the foot of which lie intrenching tools and wicker gabions.
