Sketch of encampment at Meerbeke, 1745 (Meerbeke, Flanders, Belgium) 50°49'28"N 04°02'12"E
c.1745Pencil, pen and ink on paper | Scale: 1:72,000 approx. | RCIN 729131
Following the defeat of the Allies at Melle (see RCIN 729130), and the advance of the French army, Cumberland's position at the encampment at Grammont became untenable (see RCINs 729125-8) and he retreated north-eastwards to Meerbeke, near Ninove (50°49'39"N 04°01'35"E) on 10 July.
In fact, as this little sketch map shows, the new encampment straggled across the whole countryside between Grammont and Ninove, a distance of about 14 km (8.6 miles).
Condition: four fold lines; considerably trimmed.
