1747 or later

Pencil and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:6,800 approx. | RCIN 730174

A map of the ground around Tongeren and the French camp and lines, together with the camp of the Austrian Hussars, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-north-east to top (cardinal points).

The ochre colouring around the walls of Tongeren appear to represent a dried up moat. What appears to be the full extent of the temporary field fortifications, constructed for the purposes of defending the French position, are shown. The position of the camp of the Austrian Hussars, shown as a green and white rectangle, is also indicated. The relief has been heavily shaded to emphasise the differences in ground level.

Condition: one fold line; double pin pricks to each corner; induced discolouration on verso.
