A view of the Battle of Fontenoy, 11 May 1745, fought between the French, commanded by Louis XV (1710-74) and Marshal Maurice of Saxony (1696-1750), and the Allied army, commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65), resulting in a French victory. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with east to top.

A medium oblique view, taken from the French side, looking east with the tents of the encampment of the Allied army in the background. In the foreground are the squadrons of French cavalry in front of which are the infantry. The view portrays the early stages of the battle, with the British and Hanoverian troops massed between Fontenoy and the Bois de Barry, being raked by artillery fire from the redoubts of Eu on the edge of the woods, and by the batteries in Fontenoy. The Dutch brigades are ranged to the right of the view, with their backs to the woods, being fired on by the batteries of the French line and those at Antoing. The sunken road between Tournai and Mons runs through the troop formations.
