? GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

A PLAN / of the Incampment / of the ARMY, / Commanded by his Grace the / Duke of Marlborough, / at HERENTALLS, 2.d Oct: / 1705. / With Part of the Country about it

1742 or later

Pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:30,000 approx. | RCIN 725056

A map of the encampments of the Allied army, commanded by Captain-General John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) at Herenthout, 2 October 1705. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with south to top.

A key to the symbols used for Battalions of Foot, Squadrons of Horse, and Squadrons of Dragoons, is drawn, bottom right.

The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. This map would probably have been copied by him from an earlier map, while he was on duty in Flanders with the Duke of Cumberland's army in the 1740s during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Information about past camps and marches would have been directly relevant to logistical planning during the later war.

The encampment extends in a semi-circle around the south side of Herenthout, passing through or near to the following settlements: Worslaer (Vorselaar 51°12'08"N 04°46'21"E), Grobendunk (Grobbendonk 51°11'25"N 04°44'08"E), Bowle (Bouwel 51°10'22"N 04°44'30"E), Herenthaut (Herenthout 51°08'24"N 04°45'20"E), Merkhoven (Morkhoven 51°07'08"N 04°49'07"E), and Ouval (Oevel 51°08'16"N 04°54'16"E).
