Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:45,000 approx. | RCIN 725033

A map of the area between Friedberg and Augsburg showing the differences in terrain and the positions of the Allied army between 23 July and 4 August 1704. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with west-north-west to top.

The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. This map is probably a copy made by Schultz in the 1740s of a map made by military surveyors during the War of the Spanish Succession. The clear differentiation between low lying and probably damp terrain (indicated by short horizontal lines) and drier ground, and the limits of wooded areas, make this a valuable record of positions suitable for campsites in this area.

The area covered extends approximately from Oberhausen (48°23'36"N 10°52'52"E) in the north-west to Habershausen (Haberskirch 48°23'40"N 10°59'48"E) in the north-east, and from Innongen (Inningen 48°18'44"N 10°51'39"E) in the south-west to Otmeringe (Ottmaring 48°19'57"N 11°00'28"E) in the south-east. The encampments shown on this map also extend between Augsburg and Friedberg to Walfrehausen (Wulfertshausen 48°22'56"N 10°59'14"E).

Condition: one fold line. Verso: induced discolouration; top left: water-stained patch, shadow and ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
