War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14)

Sieges, marches, encampments and famous battles from 1701 to 1712 in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands

? GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Map of Tongeren and Bilzen, 1703 (Tongeren, Flanders, Belgium) 50°46'49"N 05°27'53"E; (Bilzen, Flanders, Belgium) 50°52'23"N 05°31'06"E

1742 or later

Pen, pencil, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on two pieces of coarse linen stitched together | Scale: 1:21,000 approx. | RCIN 725031

A map of the country between Tongeren and Bilzen showing the camps of the Allied army, the headquarters of the generals, the march routes on their way to winter quarters at Asse (Flanders, Belgium, 50°54'36"N 04°11'54"E), and the occurrence of marshy ground. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with west to top.

The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. This map is probably a copy made by Schultz of an original survey by John Armstrong, when Armstrong was serving as a field engineer with the chief engineer, Brigadier Holcroft Blood in Flanders under the command of Marlborough in 1703. John Armstrong rose to become a Major-General, Chief Engineer and Surveyor General of the Board of Ordnance.

This map would have been used by Cumberland to plan sites for encampments and troop movement during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Cumberland was in this area for the period around the Battle of Lafelt, 2 July 1747 and it is possible that this map was copied by Schultz around this time.

The area covered extends approximately from Piringen (50°47'12"N 05°25'05"E) to just west of Munsterbilzen (50°53'21"N 05°31'35"E), and from west of Bloer (50°47'00"N 05°30'00"E) to north-east of Hulbeck (Hoelbeek 50°52'19"N 05°33'32"E).
