The date of 9 November for the surrender of the fortress is taken from Ostwald (2007), p.343.
Captain Brückman, the draughtsman of this map, was on campaign in Flanders with the Duke of Cumberland in 1745 (see RCIN 726015.b).
Other commanders included Arnold Joost van Keppel, 1st Earl of Albemarle (1670-1718) and Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau (1676-1747), who commanded the Prussian troops.
The map extends from Roquetoir (Roquetoire 50°40'13"N 02°20'35"E) in the north-west to just north of Pequer (50°38'45"N 22°26'28"E) in the north-east, and from Etre Blanche (Estré-Blanche 50°35'37"N 02°19'11"E) in the south-west to Isbergue (Isbergues 50°37'23"N 02°27'32"E) in the south-east.
The topography is recorded in detail: river valleys, marshy and flooded areas, settlements; road directions are given and the fortifications of Aire, together with the three attaques, are shown. The positions of the encamped troops, together with regimental names, are marked.
