Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; gilt edges | Scale: not stated. 1:2,000 approx. | RCIN 726073

A plan of the siege of Bouchain, 6 August-13 September 1711, by the Allied army, commanded by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), resulting in the surrender of the French, commanded by Marshal Claude Louis Hector de Villars (1643-1734). War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with east to top.

The date of 6 August-13 September for the beginning of the siege and surrender of the fortress is taken from Ostwald (2007), p.343.

This large-scale map shows the detail of the fortifications and approach trenches and the lines of fire from the Allied batteries from the two attacks made by Lieutenant-General François Nicolaas, Baron von Fagel (1645-23 February 1718).

This plan appears to have been removed from a volume of manuscript maps and plans of sieges. Other maps, perhaps in a different hand but, apparently from the same volume, are scattered throughout the collection: RCINs [724061], [724090], 725007, 725009, 725011, 725013, 725021, 725023, 725027, 725030, 725032, 725041, [725044], 725045, 725047, [725055], 725074, 725087, 725098, 726007, 726014, 726022, 726045, 726053, 726065, 726080, 726086, 726090, 727004, 727007, 727011, 727013, 727014.
