A map of the operations of the British army against the American forces in New York and New Jersey, 12-20 October 1776. American War of Independence (1775-83). Oriented with north to top.

The map is hand coloured to show the routes taken by, and the positions of, the British troops (in red) and the Americans (in blue). The Americans had retreated northwards from New York, and were followed by the British and Hessian troops (about 4,000-7,500) who defeated the Americans (about 3,100), under the command of George Washington at the Battle of White Plains on 28 October 1777.

This is the earliest of three known states.

Condition: one fold line; induced discolouration to both sides.
