A view of the land and sea attack on the north side of Gibraltar on 13 September 1782. American War of Independence (1775-83): Great Siege of Gibraltar (21 June 1779-7 February 1783).

This view shows the defeat by the British and Hanoverian troops during the siege of Gibraltar of the Spanish floating batteries which were blown up by British devices known as 'hot potatoes' – cannonballs which had been pre-heated to furnace temperatures.

Parker 92.h gives the publication date of this print as August 1, 1780. He follows it by the statement that 'The date on this print, September 13, 1783, is inaccurate.' Clearly, the date on the print is indeed inaccurate and has been corrected in pencil on this example, probably during the original cataloguing process. Equally, however, Parker has himself made an error in recording the date of publication as 1780 instead of 1782, although this may have been a printer's error which was overlooked during proof reading.
