Full length portraits on horseback of Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain (12 August 1566-1 December 1633), Archduchess of Austria and her husband, Albert VII, Archduke of Austria (13 November 1559-13 July 1621), Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, together with Francisco de Mendoza (shown standing), Admiral of Aragón (bap.21 August 1550-1 March 1623), Commander-in-Chief of the Habsburg army of Flanders, all on the left, and, to the right, Maurice of Nassau (14 November 1567-23 April 1625) and his brother, Frederick Henry (29 January 1584-14 March 1647). The Eighty Years War (Dutch War of Independence) (1568-1648)

The background to the portraits is a high oblique view taken from inland looking west to the North Sea, extending from Ellemouts dijck (Ellemeet, Zeeland 51°43ʹ42ʺN  03°48ʹ55ʺE) in the north to Dunkirk (51°01ʹ58ʺN  02°22ʹ37ʺE) in the south. The march route of the Dutch army is shown, from the landing of the ship transports at Sas van Gent (51°13ʹ39ʺN  03°47ʹ55ʺE) on 22 June 1600 to Oostende (51°13ʹ24ʺN  02°54ʹ42ʺE) and, in the centre background of the print is a scaled-down representation of the Battle of the Dunes.

The Rijksmuseum example of this print (RP-P-OB-80.454A) lacks the letterpress title and text and is mounted directly below Lambert Cornelisz.’s view of the battle (see RCIN 721103).
