A high oblique view/map of the expedition of the Dutch army to land on the Flemish coast on 22 June 1600 preparatory to the proposed taking of Nieuwpoort. The Eighty Years War (Dutch War of Independence) (1568-1648). Oriented with south to top.

In the summer of 1600 Maurice of Nassau was ordered by the States General to continue the conquest of the coastal strip of Flanders as far south as Nieuport and Dunkirk. This view/map shows the Dutch forces, under the command of Prince Maurice, crossing the Schelde with a fleet of 8,000 ships and landing on the Philippine Polder on 22 June 1600, then marching to Assenede on 23 June, reaching Ecklo on the 25th and showing the route taken to Ostend.

The view covers the coast from Gensche Tsas (Sas van Gent (51°13ʹ39ʺN  03°47ʹ55ʺE), through Phillippinen (Philippine 51°16ʹ51ʺN  03°45ʹ35ʺE), Rammekens (Fort Rammekens 51°27ʹ09ʺN  03°39ʹ14ʺE), Flissingæ (Vlissingen 51°26ʹ33ʺN  03°34ʹ25ʺE), Oostende (51°13ʹ24ʺN  02°54ʹ43ʺE) and Nievpoort (Nieuwpoort 510748N  024505E). The inland towns of Sluis (51°18ʹ30ʺN  03°23ʹ10ʺE) and Brugge (51°12ʹ32ʺN  03°13ʹ27ʺE) are depicted in detail.

The original printing of this view/map was made in 1616. The example catalogued here was reprinted, probably by Hondius, with extensive topographical revisions to the coastal areas, including two new forts, at Sluis and west of Brugge, as well as other works, in or after, 1633 (the new forts are dated 1633 on the print).
