A panoramic view of the defeated Spanish garrison, marching out of Gennep on 29 July 1641 towards Venlo with the full honours of war. Eighty Years War (1568-1648).

The attribution to Pieter Nolpe is made by the Rijksmuseum (RP-P-OB-81.503E).

The Governor of Gennep, the Irish Colonel Thomas Preston, 1st Viscount Tara (1585-1655), can be seen in the right hand plate, bending the knee in surrender to Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange. Preston was later accused of surrendering unnecessarily, being well equipped with both men and supplies (González de Lé>on, p.276). The fortress of Gennep can be seen in the distance to the right behind Preston.
