A map and letterpress text describing the capture of the fortress of Schenkenschanz on 27/28 July 1635 by the Spanish army commanded by Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria (1609/1610-9 November 1641). Eighty Years War (1568-1648). Oriented with north to top.
Situated at the confluence of the Rivers Waal and Rhine, the fortress of Schenkenschanz occupied a strategically formidable position, guarding the entrance to the Netherlands. Its capture opened up the possibility of a Spanish invasion. No sooner was the fortress occupied by the Spanish forces than Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (29 January 1584-14 March 1647) counter-attacked by laying siege to the place on 30 July 1635 that lasted until 30 April 1636, resulting in its capitulation to the Dutch.
This appears to be a re-engraving of a work by Bonaventura Peeters the Elder (23 July 1614-25 July 1652). Peeters’s version is presumably earlier because it does not show the pontoon bridge which was made by the Spanish, crossing the Waal River between Schenkenschanz and the new fort on the other side of the river (see Rijksmuseum RP-P-1933-300).
