Engraving; printed on paper; mounted on paper (Mount Type B); gilt edges top, right and bottom | 26.0 x 33.5 cm (image) | RCIN 721094

A view of the cavalry duel between Geraert [Gerard] Abramsz. van Houwelingen (nickname ‘Leckerbeetjen’ [or gourmand]; ca 1560-5 February 1600) and 21 of his men, all in the service of the Spanish Netherlands, and the French Pierre de Breauté and 21 of his men, all in the service of the States General on the heathland near Vucht on 5 February 1600, resulting in the deaths of van Houwelingen and de Breauté. Eighty Years War (Dutch War of Independence) (1568-1648). See the notes to RCIN 721093.

Almost the same as RCIN 721093; both views are by the same author. This version has the addition of a title and, top centre, the coat of arms of Antonie Schetz van Grobbendonk, 1564-1641, military governor of 's-Hertogenbosch. There are small differences in detail, for example: the gallows lack the bodies of two men hanging from them. The words in the text are the same, but spelling and spacing varies.

The Rijksmuseum example (RP-P-OB-80.508) is stated to be after a print by Joannes van Doetechum. Another version of this print, engraved by F. Beusecom, is in the Anne S.K. Browne Collection (NeB1600mf-1).
