A view of Admiral Adam Duncan receiving the surrender of Vice Admiral Jan de Winter after the Battle of Camperdown on 11 October 1797. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): War of the First Coalition (1792-8).

The Battle of Camperdown, fought on 11 October 1797 between a British fleet under the command of Admiral Adam Duncan, and a Dutch fleet commanded by Vice-Admiral Jan de Winter, was a major engagement resulting in what was considered to be the greatest ever victory for a British fleet against an equal opponent up to that date. Admiral Duncan was created 1st Viscount Duncan of Camperdown on 30 October 1797.

This view shows Admiral Duncan, on the left, hat in left hand with his right hand outstretched, and the Dutch Admiral de Winter, in a long black coat offering his sword in surrender.
