The Battle of Camperdown, fought on 11 October 1797 between a British fleet under the command of Admiral Adam Duncan, and a Dutch fleet commanded by Vice-Admiral Jan de Winter, was a major engagement resulting in what was considered to be the greatest ever victory for a British fleet against an equal opponent up to that date. Admiral Duncan was created 1st Viscount Duncan of Camperdown on 30 October 1797.
This view shows Admiral Duncan, on the left, hat in left hand with his right hand outstretched, and the Dutch Admiral de Winter, in a long black coat offering his sword in surrender. Between Duncan and de Winter, the following British officers are portrayed [left to right:] Lieutenant Oswald, Captain Sir W.G. Fairfax, Major Trollope, and Lieutenant Richardson.
The uppercase words in the title of the view are engraved in outline, and the other words are also faintly engraved, suggesting that this is a proof copy, as noted in the annotations on the verso.
