A view of the Battle of Lodi, fought on 10 May 1796 between the French, commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), and the Habsburg Austrian army, commanded by Feldzeugmeister [Lieutenant-General] Johann Peter Beaulieu (1725-1819) and General-Major Karl Philipp Sebottendorf van der Rose (1740-1818), resulting in a French victory. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): War of the First Coalition (1792-8).

This view is engraved after the watercolour painted in 1797 by Bacler d'Albe which is now in the archives of the Service Historique de l'Armee de Terre at the Chateau de Vincennes (catalogue number B160). The artist became a General and was Napoleon's personal cartographer from 1804 to 1814, serving as the Director of the Depot de la Guerre from 1799 to 1804, and as the Chef du Bureau Topographique from 1804 to 1814.

The scene shows the second, successful, French assault with Napoleon's troops taking command of the bridge over the River Adda. The French army is firing at the Austrian troops on the other side of the river and Napoleon can be seen in the lower left corner, directing his men.
