A view of the evacuation from Toulon on 18 December 1793 of the French Royalists by a combined British and Spanish fleet commanded by Samuel Hood. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): War of the First Coalition (1792-8).

Toulon was the French Navy's principal Mediterranean port. It was turned over to the British navy on 1 October by its Loyalist inhabitants and the harbour was occupied by the British fleet, under the command of Admiral Lord Hood. By December 1793 the French Revolutionary forces, to whom was attached Napoleon Bonaparte as a colonel of artillery, had surrounded the port and attacked it. This view shows the evacuation of the inhabitants of Toulon by Admiral Hood in the face of the attack, and the burning of the French arsenal.
