A view of the naval Battle of the Glorious First of June, fought off Ushant, 1 June 1794, between the British, commanded by Admiral Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe (1726-99) and the French, commanded by Admiral Louis-Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse (1747-1812). French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): War of the First Coalition (1792-8).

The three ships in the foreground are, from left to right, the 74-gun Le Vengeur, foundering on her right (port) side; the 110-gun Queen Charlotte, commanded by Admiral Earl Howe; and the 110-gun Le Montagne. In the background, from left to right, can be seen the stern of the 74-gun Leviathon, the 74-gun Marlborough, and the French 74-gun Mutius Scævola. These are followed by the masts and topsails of the French 74-gun L'Impetueux, which was captured with, to its right, the 74-gun ships Culloden and Russell and the 100-gun Royal Sovereign. Between Le Vengeur and Queen Charlotte can be seen the 74-gun Defence and the French 80-gun Le Sans Pareil which was captured. Behind Le Montagne are the masts and topsails of the 74-gun Le Northumberland which was also captured and, at the right edge of the view, the 74-gun Brunswick.
