Map of Ratzeburg, 1693 (Ratzeburg, Schleswig Holstein, Germany) 53°42'00"N 10°46'01"E
1719 or laterPen, ink and watercolour on paper; gilt edges top, bottom, left and right | Scale: not stated. 1:12,000 approx. | RCIN 724061
Ratzeburg was the capital of Saxe-Lauenburg, part of the old Duchy of Saxony. In 1693, Christian V of Denmark almost entirely destroyed Ratzeburg by bombardment in a bid to establish his succession to the Dukedom, against the claim of Hanover.
The map shows the positions of the Danish encampments, the boats used for crossing the Küchen See (not named; to the south [left] of Ratzeburg), and the Ratzeburger See to the north [right] of the town. The approach trenches and batteries are also depicted.
This plan appears to have been removed from a volume, made about 1719 or later, of manuscript maps and plans of sieges. Other maps, perhaps in a different hand but, apparently from the same volume, are scattered throughout the collection: RCINs [724090], 725007, 725009, 725011, 725013, 725021, 725023, 725027, 725030, 725032, 725041, [725044], 725045, 725047, [725055], 725074, 725087, 725098, 726007, 726014, 726022, 726041, 726045, 726053, 726065, 726073, 726080, 726086, 726090, 727004, 727007, 727011, 727013, 727014.
