Louis XV was 12 at the time of this practice siege and fortification and became King a few months later, in December 1722. ‘En 1685, Louis XIV fit don à madame de Montespan de Porché-Fontaine et des terres qu’il avait à Montreuil. En 1722, le régent fit dresser un camp à Porché-Fontaine et un fort à Montreuil, pour exercer Louis XV au métier de la guerre’: Jacques-Antoine Dulaure, 1825, vol.1, p.300. The map may have been issued as a supplement to Mercure de France September 1722. This periodical appears to have been the Mercure Galant which became the Mercure de France in 1724. BL Mic.A.5248-5447 for 1722 and 1723. The description of the Courtarvel coat of arms, borne by Hubert de Courtarvel, Marquis de Pezé, to whom this map is dedicated, is given in http://www.coats-of-arms-heraldry.com as ‘Azure, a saltier Or, cantoned of 16 lozenges of the same’ (last visited 28 June 2016).

M.r de Clavelles aussi Brigadier des Armées du Roy Gouverneur du Fort. [Bottom left, in separate cartouche, a dedication to the King and the names of the principal officers:] AU ROY.
