    A plan of the encampment near Newport on the Isle of Wight in 1740. The plan is decorated, bottom right, by a vignette of a uniformed soldier, standing at the foot of a castellated tower from which flies an unidentified standard. In front of the soldier, on the ground, lie the artefacts of war: cannon, mortar, muskets, flags, drums, etc. The encamped regiments were: Harrison's (possibly Lt.Gen. Henry Harrison who was Colonel of the 15th Regiment of Foot for 34 years from 8 February 1715 to 15 April 1749: Leslie (1974) p.57); Wynyard's (this may be Lt.Gen. John Wynyard who became Colonel of the 17th Regiment of Foot on 31 August 1742, a year after this camp (Leslie (1974) p.59)); Lowther's; Wolffe's; Robinson's; Moreton's. A companion print was published by Mengeot and Seton on the same date and is at RCIN 728031. Although the date of publication of this print is March 1741, it is likely that the scene represents the encampment near Newport which took place in the summer of 1740. The young thirteen-year-old James Wolfe (later General and victor of Quebec in 1759) was present with his father Edward at this camp from which he wrote home to his mother on 6 August, describing the embarkation of troops for Carthagena (letter printed in Wood, (1915), p.5). Condition: flat, no fold lines. Verso: slight surface dirt.
