Siege of Rochelle, 1573 (La Rochelle, Poitou-Charentes, France) 46°10ʹ00ʺN 01°09ʹ00ʺW

1573 or later

Etching with engraving; printed on paper; mounted on paper (Mount Type A); gilt edges bottom, right and top | 39.8 x 34.3 cm (image and sheet) | RCIN 721069

A middle oblique view of the siege, from 11 February to 24 June 1573, of the Protestant Huguenot town of La Rochelle by catholic troops commanded by the Duke of Anjou (later Henry III of France; 19 September 1551-2 August 1589), resulting in the lifting of the siege on 24 June with victory to neither side. France: Fourth War of Religion (1572-1573). Oriented with west-eouth-west to top.

La Rochelle was the main stronghold of the Huguenots in France. The port was of strategic importance to England, with whom there were links of long standing. The town was administratively independent; its layout is clearly shown in this view: streets, gate and principal buildings are named.
