Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; gilt edges top, bottom, left and right | Scale: not stated. 1:21,000 approx. | RCIN 724090

A map of the Allied encampment and field fortifications around Brussels in June 1697. Nine Years War (1688-97). Oriented with north-west to top (cardinal points).

The map bears the same title as the engraved map at RCIN 724089 and shows the same general information. However, it is drawn to a larger scale than the printed map, which lacks the detailed information on the names and dispositions of the regiments, It is possible that RCIN 724090 is copied in part from the printed map, and perhaps at a later date.

The terrain of the country around Brussels is shown in some detail, together with the fortified lines of the Allies and their encampment on the west side of Brussels. The Allied army, apprised of Villeroi's plan to bombard Brussels by their intelligence services, had marched overnight on 22/23 June for 30 km (18.6 miles) through the forests of Soignies in order to pre-empt the French arrival. The French arrived hours later but were beaten back by an Allied offensive.

This plan has been removed from a volume, made about 1719 or later, of manuscript maps and plans of sieges. Other maps, perhaps in a different hand but, apparently from the same volume, are scattered throughout the collection: RCINs [724061], 725007, 725009, 725011, 725013, 725021, 725023, 725027, 725030, 725032, 725041, [725044], 725045, 725047, [725055], 725074, 725087, 725098, 726007, 726014, 726022, 726041, 726045, 726053, 726065, 726073, 726080, 726086, 726090, 727004, 727007, 727011, 727013, 727014.
