A map of the Battle of St Denis, or Battle of Casteau, fought on 14-15 August 1678 between the French, commanded by François-Henri de Montmorency, Duc de Luxembourg (1628-95) and the Dutch, commanded by William III of Orange (later William III of England and Ireland and William II of Scotland; 1650-1702), resulting in a strategic victory for the Dutch. Franco-Dutch War (1672-8). Oriented with south-west to top.

The Battle of St Denis was the final conflict of the Franco-Dutch War and was fought after the Peace Treaty of Nijmegen was signed on 10 August. This map shows the field of battle extending from Oboure (Obourg 50°28ʹ25ʺN 04°00ʹ31ʺE) north-west of Hauree (Havré 50°27ʹ50ʺN 04°02ʹ48ʺE), north-eastwards along the River L'Obroecheuil, passing through St Denis up to Casteau. The allied Dutch and Spanish encampments stretch from about present-day Ghislage (50°28ʹ32ʺN 04°03ʹ10ʺE) to Teoysies (Thieusies 50°30ʹ54N 04°02ʹ57E), a distance of about 5 km (3.1 miles). The encampments of the French extend from Mons across the western side of the battle field.
