Plan of the siege of Valenciennes, 1676-7 (Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France) 50°21'00"N 03°32'00"E

1676 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:1,000 approx. | RCIN 724013

An unfinished plan of the siege of Valenciennes, carried out from November 1676 by the French army under the command of Louis XIV, Louvois, and Vauban, resulting in the capitulation of the town by the Imperial (Holy Roman Empire) forces on 17 March 1677. Franco-Dutch War (1672-8). Oriented with south-east to top.

A rectangle surmounted by a semi-circular space, bottom right of the plan, has been left blank for the later insertion of a title and explanatory text. The positions of the batteries, sited along the trenches of the approach works, is shown together with the line of direction of fire of the cannon. No mortar batteries appear to be shown (the trajectory of the line of mortar fire was conventionally shown by a curved line). The approach roads to the town are depicted as running along sunken hollows.
