1694 or later

Pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on coarse linen | Scale: not stated. 1:35,700 approx. | RCIN 724065

A map/high oblique view of the encampment of the Imperial and Allied armies at Heilbronn, together with their lines of field fortification, August 1694. Nine Years War (1688-97). Oriented with west to top.

This map shows the strong defensive position which had been taken up by the Imperial and Allied armies, commanded by Field Marshal Louis William, Margrave of Baden (1655-1707) between June and August. At the southern end, symbols comprising brown ink crosses probably represent chevaux-de-frises, a defensive barrier protecting the southern end of the lines and made up, in this instance, probably of felled trees. Further west along the southern end of the lines are symbols which resemble lollipops on sticks – these represent mines or mortar emplacements. The names of the encamped regiments are given. The map symbols and colourings give the impression of fertile agricultural land in the river valleys with vineyards and woodlands on the higher ground.
