This map shows the point, during the operations on the Rhine in the closing stages of the war in 1697, when the French and German armies stood facing each other just about a league apart. The draughtsmanship of the map is very similar to that of some of the British military engineers who fought in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Older maps were commonly copied and referred to in order to provide topographical and military information to assist in the planning of later campaigns.
The map extends from Benheim (Benheim, Alsace, France 48°51ʹ53ʺN 08°05ʹ08ʺE), Seltz (Seltz, Alsace, France 48°53ʹ43ʺN 08°06ʹ27ʺE), Menichhausen (Munchhausen, Alsace, France 48°55ʹ13ʺN 08°08ʹ50ʺE) and Ettickheim (Ötigheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany 48°53ʹ27ʺN 08°14ʹ04ʺE) in the north-west to Bade (Baden-Baden, Baden-Württemberg, Germany 48°45ʹ38ʺN 08°14ʹ23ʺE) in the south-east.
