The attribution of the draughtsmanship of this map to Schultz is made on a stylistic basis. In 1743 and 1744, the Allied armies campaigned along the Rhine during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Schultz made several maps of the area during this period while he was on campaign with Cumberland. This map is based on surveys made by a French military engineer in the service of the duc de Choiseul. It includes many details of topography, and military information, that are not present on Schultz's smaller-scale copy of Voisin's work (RCIN 724081) suggesting that Schultz may have had access to a range of source materials created by Voisin. Schultz was in this area with the Allied army during August to September, 1743 (see RCINs 728116 and 728127).
This map purports to show the same terrain as that covered by RCIN 724082 but there are significant differences in detail between the two. While the distribution of fortified trenches is similar, the extent of the abbatis (lines of felled trees) is greater at RCIN 724083, and the French encampments are shown only at RCIN 724082. The fluvial network, and indication of terrain type is more comprehensive at RCIN 724083 with at least five types of land use being indicated by symbols: woodland, cultivated land (parallel lines), rough damp pasture adjacent to the streams, marshland (tussocks of grass/rushes on a base of horizontal lines), and plains/grassland (blank, no symbol). The word ‘plaine’ is written in pencil to one of the blank areas north of Speyer.
Condition: ten fold lines; three small tears to bottom edge; old tear to bottom edge repaired on verso with paper; two small tears to top edge; acid from the ink has eaten through the neatlines. Verso: bottom centre, ghosting from Cumberland's cipher label; induced discolouration; surface dirt.
