View of Flix, 1643 (Flix, Catalonia, Spain) 41°13ʹ51ʺN 00°33ʹ00ʺE
c. 1660Etching and engraving; printed on paper; mounted on paper (Mount Type B); gilt edges right and bottom | 15.0 x 50.4 cm (neatline) | RCIN 723021
A view of the fortress of Flix, and the Spanish siege, commanded by Juan de Garay Otáñez y Rada (1586-1650), Captain General of the Catalonian army, which he was forced to raise by Philippe, comte de La Mothe-Houdancourt (1605-24 March 1657) on 10 February 1643. Catalan Revolt (1640-1659).
The attribution of the etching to Adam Perelle is made on stylistic grounds and on the basis that he etched several views for Beaulieu's work, but so also did Gabriel Perelle (although he died in 1677 and produced fewer views), and an N. Perelle.
This print was published, sometime between 1676 and 1694, in Sebastien de Beaulieu's Les Conquêtes de Louis le Grand (see RCINs 723027.1.ay and 723027.2.fl). The print could be published in at least two formats: 1) on its own, surrounded by a decorative engraved border; 2) pasted to the bottom of an upper sheet which contained a blank oval for the insertion of a portrait or armorials (see RCIN 723027).
The date of 1642, given in the George III heading and the George III catalogue entry, appears to be an error. A description of the action, together with the dates, is given in de Serres, p.627 and in Du Londel, p.184.
Attributed to Adam Perelle (1640-95) (etcher)
