Printed and manuscript maps, prints and views of 22 seventeenth-century wars

ITALIAN SCHOOL, MID-17TH CENTURY

View of the siege of Sebenico, 1647 (Šibenik, Šibensko-Kniniska, Croatia) 43°43ʹ38ʺN 15°54ʹ21ʺE

1647 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; mounted on paper (Mount Type B); gilt edges right and bottom | 38.2 x 52.0 cm (neatline) | RCIN 723077

A high oblique view of the Venetian port of Sebenico, besieged by the Turks in September 1647 during which a battle was fought between 9 and 16 of the month resulting in the lifting of the siege and the retreat of the Turks. Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War (1645-1669). Oriented with east-north-east to top (cardinal points).

The blank panels of this unfinished view would have been filled with the title and key to the letters and numbers on the drawing. It is very similar, though not identical, to RCIN 723076 (q.v.). A battle rages in the top right corner between the Christian forces, denoted by a flag with a cross, and the Turks, identified by flags showing a star, while Turkish troops in the background bear flags with just the crescent. Principal routes are coloured in red, as are some of the surrounding hills.

The unfinished coat of arms, top left, may be that of the Querini family of Venice which would have been a gold field with azure fess on which were three gold fleur-de-lis. See RCIN 723076 which was dedicated to Giacomo Querini, the Venetian ambassador to Spain.
