Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. Not to scale. | RCIN 726087

A map showing the positions of the Danish and Swedish fleets off the island of Ruden, in the entrance to Greifswalder Bay, July 1715. Great Northern War (1700-1721). Oriented with south-south-west to top (compass rose).

The action shown here was part of the Pomeranian Campaign of 1715-1716, in which an Allied army of Prussian, Danish and Saxon troops fought against the Swedes in the Swedish areas of northern Germany. This sketch, in Danish, shows the Danish fleet, comprising ships of the line and flat barges and frigates, commanded by Vice Admiral Christian Thomesen Sehested (1664-1736).

The sketch is not drawn to scale. It shows the island of Grips Wals Oe (Greifswalder Oie 54°14'37"N 13°54'39"E) to the left, and Fresendorp (now Freesendorfer See 54°09'45"N 13°41'15"E). The ‘esckwends batterie’ is located on the peninsula of ‘Iserhoved’ (Thiessow 54°16'38"N 13°42'56"E) on the island of Rugen.
