WILLIAM FADEN (1 JULY 1749-21 MARCH 1836)

Order of battle of the Indian army, 1791

1792

Engraving; printed on paper; hand-coloured | 23.1 x 17.0 cm (image) | RCIN 735002.2

An order of battle of the British army in India, commanded by Charles, First Marquess Cornwallis (31 December 1738-5 October 1805), Governor-General of India, 2 May 1791. Third Anglo-Mysore War (1789-1792).

This appears to be the order of battle that may have been current at the time of the Battle of Seringapatam (15 May 1791). The Second in Command is listed as Major General Medows; the Left Wing was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Maxwell, and the Right Wing by Lieutenant-Colonel Stuart; the Artillery was under the command of Colonel Duff. Brigade and Company commanders are named, as are Staff Officers, Aides-de-Camp and Majors of Brigade and their Quartermasters. The regimental rectangles appear to be coloured according to the uniforms of each.

Bound in with the order of battle are a printed account of the operations of the British army in India in 1791 (RCIN 735002.1), and a sketch of the positions of the British army at Seringapatam on 15 May 1791 (RCIN 735002.3).

Condition: no fold lines.
