Russo-Turkish Wars

The wars of 1735–9, 1768–74 and 1787–92

? ACADEMIA PETROPOLITANA [ST. PETERSBURG]

Map of Little Tartary and Crimea, 1736

1736 or later

Engraving and some etching; printed from two copperplates on two sheets of paper, then joined | Scale: 1:2,000,000 approx. | RCIN 728005

A map of the Russian operations against the Turks and Tartars between the Dnieper and Don rivers in 1736. Russo-Turkish War (1735-9). Oriented with north to top (compass rose).

The geographical detail on this map is stylised and bears no relation to the relative accuracy of outline of the Crimea, for example, which is found in the Russian maps at RCINs 728001.a and b, on which this map, though it may be of Russian origin, is evidently not based. The River Dniester is shown as far as Choczim (Khotyn), the Dnieper is shown as far north as Kiev and the River Don as far as Tawrow. The operations of the Russian army in the Crimea and at Azov are depicted.

Condition: two fold lines; small tear to top and bottom of centre vertical fold; bottom edge creased. Verso: surface dirt along edges.
