? WILLIAM ROY (1726-90)

Map of Cherbourg, 1758 (Cherbourg-Octeville, Basse-Normandy, France) 49°38'23"N 01°36'58"W

c.1758

Pen and ink on thin paper | Scale: 1:17,200 approx. | RCIN 732067.b

A map of Cherbourg and the surrounding country, 1758. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with south to top.

The attribution to William Roy is made on stylistic grounds. This appears to be a tracing by Roy of Dundas's sketch (RCIN 732067.a); it is at a slightly smaller scale than Dundas's sketch, and there are positional differences of detail.

Condition: six fold lines; formerly folded to 8.3 x 13.9 cm; brown stains.
