The Seven Years War (1756-63)

Manuscript and printed maps and views, correspondence and journals from the first global war

? SIR DAVID DUNDAS (1735-1820)

Map of Cherbourg, 1758 (Cherbourg-Octeville, Basse-Normandy, France) 49°38'23"N 01°36'58"W

c.1758

Pencil, pen, ink, grey wash and watercolour on paper; laid down on linen | Scale: not stated. 1:24,200 approx. | RCIN 732067.a

A map of Cherbourg and the surrounding country, 1758. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with south to top.

The initials 'D.D.' which are cited in the old catalogue are not present on the map. However, the hand is very similar to that of David Dundas who was present on the expedition. The mistake in the title, referring to General Bligh, who was in command of the second expedition to the coast of France in August 1758, indicates that this map was made sometime after that event.

The linen backing has a cropped mark: a thistle with words in a circle around it: WILLIA[M] P[?]. The three items, RCINs 732067.a-c, were formerly stored in a rough buff paper folder, 51.3 x 64.2 cm, folded to 51.3 x 32.4 cm, on which is written the old heading and, in black ink, the numbers which are stamped on the items.

Condition: three fold lines; brown stains to both sides. Verso: induced discolouration; top left, water-stained patch and shadow from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label; bottom right, part of a linen mark remains.
