The attribution to David Dundas is made on stylistic grounds. The troop encampments on the Isle of Wight, which gathered in mid-April 1758, were preliminary to the coastal raids on France which began with the expedition to St Malo in June, in which Dundas took part.
The confident brushwork which is used to represent relief, and the general style of cartography, was gained from experience on the Military Survey of Scotland (1747-55). The dimensions of the space occupied by each regiment, and the space between each, is indicated in yards.
Condition: four fold lines; formerly torn along entire length of centre vertical fold; repaired on verso with white paper. Verso: surface dirt; induced discolouration.
? Sir David Dundas (1735-1820) (surveyor and draughtsman)
