The Seven Years War (1756-63)

Manuscript and printed maps and views, correspondence and journals from the first global war

? JOHN CLEEVE PLEYDELL (1736-1816)

Map of St Cast, 1758 (Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, Brittany, France) 48°37'49"N 02°15'27"W

c.1758

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:42,300 approx. | RCIN 732078.a

A map of St Cast and the surrounding country to illustrate the British expedition in September 1758. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with south to top.

The tentative attribution to Pleydell is made on stylistic grounds. The map shows the coastline from St Cast east to St Malo, a distance of about 16 km (10 miles). The camp at the Baye de la Fosse, where the troops landed on 7 September is shown, together with further camp positions in the vicinity of St Guildo and an encounter with the French in and around the Bay of St Cast. There is no explanation, on the map, to the numbers which appear against the regiments.

Condition: one fold line; formerly torn along length of fold into two halves; double pin holes top centre and bottom centre. Verso: induced discolouration; surface dirt along right edge.
