Manuscript and printed maps and views, correspondence and journals from the first global war

FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON BAUER (1731-83)

Map of the Battle of Wilhelmsthal, 1762 (Wilhelmsthal, Hesse, Germany) 51°24'00"N 09°25'00"E

1763

Etching and engraving; printed from two copperplates on two sheets of paper, joined; hand coloured | Scale: 1:46,400 approx. | RCIN 732001.x

A map of the Battle of Wilhemsthal, fought between the Allied army under the command of Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick, and the French commanded by the Prince de Soubise and duc d'Estrées on 24 June 1762, resulting in an Allied victory. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with north-north-east to top (compass rose).

The printing of the base map is faint, as if from a worn plate, but many of the place names, together with the title cartouche and explanatory text, are in a blacker ink, as if they have been re-cut on the copper. The troops of the British and Hanoverian army are coloured red; those of Brunswick in yellow; Hessians in blue; and the French in dark green. Another copy of this map, printed on silk, can be found at RCIN 733057.
