Plan of Havana, 1762 (Havana, Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba) 23°07'58"N 82°22'58"W

c.1762

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on two pieces of paper, joined | Scale: 1:2,356 approx. | RCIN 733056

A large-scale plan of the town of Havana showing the alarm posts and regimental quarters of the British army, 1762. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with west-south-west to top (compass rose).

This plan is drawn in a typical Board of Ordnance style. Several of the streets have been given names reflecting the victorious British army, thus: Pocock Street, Keppel Street, Albemarle Street, York Street, Elliot Street. The blocks of buildings are drawn with a shaded or thickened line on the north and east sides, a practice which was to be adopted by Ordnance Survey a century later. The lettering within the town area is similar in style to that of Patrick Mackellar who was chief engineer at the siege, but an attribution to him would be, at most, tenuous.

Additional text: [top right, in rectangular panel, a list of the Regiments by name and number and a key, A-I, K-Q, to their quarters in the town, and key, a-i, k-m, p, to the 'Alarm Posts' they occupied within the town.]
