The Seven Years War (1756-63)

Manuscript and printed maps and views, correspondence and journals from the first global war

? PATRICK MACKELLAR (1717-78)

Plan of Havana and Fort Morro, 1762 (Havana, Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba) 23°07'58"N 82°22'58"W; (Castillo del Morro, Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba) 23°09'00"N 82°21'00"W

c.1762

Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on linen | Scale: 1:4,800. | RCIN 733054

A plan of the British batteries erected during the siege of Havana, 1762. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with south east to top (cardinal points).

The tenuous attribution to Patrick Mackellar is made on stylistic grounds. This is a detailed survey of the hinterland of Fort Morro, showing the wooded and scrubby nature of the country, the positions of the batteries, and the several roads running through the area. The boom and sunken ships are shown at the entrance to the harbour.
