A map of the Battle of Fontenoy, fought on 11 May 1745 between the French, commanded by Louis XV (1710-74) and Marshal Maurice de Saxe (1696-1750), and the Allied army commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1726-65), resulting in a French victory. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top (compass rose).

A note below the key in the title panel explains that the colours used to distinguish the troops are: English (red); Hanoverians (yellow); Dutch (orange); Austrians (green); French (blue). This follows the generally accepted colour conventions of the day and, in particular, copies the conventions used in his manuscript maps by Hancko.
