1745 or laterEngraving and etching; printed from four copperplates on four sheets of paper; hand-coloured. Manuscript annotations in ink and watercolour. | Scale: 1:119,500 approx. [usually given as ca 1:110,000] | RCIN 729061.a
A set of four (sheets 3,4,8,9) out of fifteen engraved sheets of Crepy's revision (1743-4), on different sheetlines, of Fricx's Carte des Pays Bas et des frontières de France (Brussels, 1703-1712). War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top (compass rose).
The titles of the top two sheets (sheets 3 and 4) have been pasted to the top of the sheets. From left to right, the titles and imprints are:
CARTE DES ENVIRONS DE GAND L'ECLUSE BRUGE HULST AXEL DEINSE LE SAS DE GAND &c. / Dressé sur les Memoires de Eugène Henri frix en 1743 à Paris Chez Crepy rue S. Jacques a limage S. Pierre
CARTE PARTICULIERE DES ENVIRONS DE MALINES ANVERS LIER HERENTALS AERSCHOT &c. / Dressé sur les Memoires de Eugène Henri frix en 1743 a Paris Chez Crepy rue S. Jacques a limage S. Pierre.
The relationship between the sheetlines of Crepy's map, and Fricx's map from which it is derived, is illustrated in Lemoine-Isabeau 1984, pp.86-7.
This printed map has been used as a base map on which the engineer, François Hancko, has superimposed in manuscript the marches, encampments and field fortifications of the Allied army for the year 1745. Some of the French positions are shown in blue. It is one of nine sets, of varying sheet numbers, of the reissues and revised republications of Fricx's map by Crepy or Covens and Mortier in the 1740s which are in the Royal Collection.
The four sheets are trimmed to the neatline on their inner margins and mounted together on linen; the outer margins are trimmed to the edge of the border. An engraved map of the Battle of Fontenoy is pasted to the bottom right of the south-east sheet [sheet 9]. See RCIN 729061.b for more information on this map. The printed titles of sheets 3 and 4 are pasted along the top.
