A map of the Battle of Fontenoy, 11 May 1745, fought between the French, commanded by Louis XV (1710-74) and Marshal Maurice of Saxony (1696-1750), and the Allied army, commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65), resulting in a French victory. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top (compass rose).

The details on this map are consistent with François Hancko's drafts at RCINs 729094 and 729045 on which Husson based an engraved plan (see RCIN 729061.b) which carried Hancko's name.

Additional text: [left and right, down the sides of the map, keys in French and Dutch, A-I, K-U, W-Y, to the salient geographical features and the positions of the troops throughout the battle, and an explanation of the colours used to distinguish the armies: English (red), Hanoverian (yellow), Dutch (orange), Austrian (green) and French (blue).]

Condition: one fold line; worn along fold; creased. Verso: bottom, right of centre, water-stained patch and shadow from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
