Three maps of the different stages of the Battle of Fontenoy, fought on 11 May 1745 between the French, commanded by Louis XV (1710-74) and Marshal Maurice of Saxony (1696-50), and the Allied army, commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65), resulting in a French victory. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top (cardinal points).

Orientation varies: in the first map, the settlements at the top of the map: Baignies (Baugnies 50°33'37"N 03°33'07"E), Maubray (50°33'03"N 03°30'14"E) and Pierone (Péronnes 50°33'05"N 03°27'13"E), are on a south and south-east alignment, while the settlements along the bottom of the map, Ramecroix and Gaurain, run from north-west to south-east. The eastern limit of the map is Bourgeon, and the westernmost point is Calonne (50°34'39"N 03°26'06"E), on the west side of the River L'Escaut (Scheldt).

Condition: at least seven fold lines; the map appears to have been torn apart along some of the folds and has been repaired in earlier times by being laid down on coarse linen. Verso: induced discolouration; considerable brown discolouration; bottom, right of centre, water-stained patch and shadow from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
